Roger Bell – Melbourne’s Leading hyperhidrosis surgeon

I obtained my undergraduate degree through the University of Western Australia in 1979. I became a fellow of the Australasian College of Surgeons in 1988 and was awarded a Fellowship in Vascular Surgery in 1991.

On completion of my Surgical Fellowship, I was appointed the inaugural Research Fellow for the National Liver Transplant Unit at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, under the supervision of Prof Ross Sheil. As well as playing an important role on the surgical team, I became involved in numerous research projects, including studies in liver preservation using an isolated liver perfusion model, CMV infection in liver transplant patients, and vascular complications in liver transplant recipients.

With this grounding, together with Prof Tony House and Prof Bill Reed, I was instrumental in establishing the Liver Transplant program in Western Australia at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) in 1994.

My training in vascular surgery was completed at St Thomas’ Hospital in London under Prof Norman Browse, who was renowned as a world expert in venous disease.

In 1991, I returned to Western Australia as a Senior Lecturer in General Surgery, a role that involved clinical duties and lecturing, tutoring and examining final year medical students. It was during this period that the Liver Transplant Unit was established.

In 1995, I was appointed Head of Vascular Surgery at SCGH in Perth, a position I held for five years. In that time, the Unit obtained accreditation for vascular trainees, collaborated closely with the interventional radiologists to establish a first class endovascular facility, and I continued to play an important role as a Transplant Surgeon, involved with the kidney and liver transplant programs.

In 2000, I relocated to Melbourne to take on an appointment as a Vascular/Transplant Surgeon at the Monash Medical Centre. I have become heavily involved in renal and pancreas transplantation, and currently head the surgical division of the Transplant Programme.

My surgical interests cover the entire gamut of vascular surgery, with skills in both open and endovascular procedures, treating patients with peripheral vascular disease, aortic aneurysms and carotid stenosis. I continue to teach undergraduate and post-graduate students and have an interest in research.

I have developed a particular interest in managing patients with hyperhidrosis and have performed over 1000 sympathectomy procedures. Other interests include “Claudication in Elite Athletes”, Endovenous Laser Ablation for varicose veins, renal access for dialysis and renal transplantation.

My reputation in treating patients with hyperhidrosis has spread throughout the nation with many patients arriving from interstate for treatment.
