Do you suffer from excessively sweaty feet? Lumbar Sympathectomy stops feet from sweating.
Sweaty Feet (Plantar Hyperhidrosis) may cause sufferers to change their socks several times a day and avoid removing their shoes in public for fear of foot odour. Sufferers avoid wearing sandals and thongs because their feet become too slippery.
Excessively sweaty feet may result in damage to shoes, and an increased incidence of fungal infection of the foot. Many patients complain of an associated odour. Excessively sweaty feet can occur in isolation or conjunction with palmar hyperhidrosis.
When it accompanies palmar hyperhidrosis, the common approach is to deal with the hand sweating first by Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy (ETS) as this is usually the more dominant problem. In 60% of patients, this results in a reduction in the severity of the foot sweating.
In cases where sweaty feet is the sole or dominant problem, a Lumbar Sympathectomy (LS) will dry the feet. Want to stop your feet from sweating or looking for a cure for sweaty feet? Contact us today.
Lumbar Sympathectomy
A lumbar sympathectomy is an open procedure under general anaesthesia. Two separate incisions are made, one on each side of the abdomen. The muscle fibres of the abdominal wall are split to gain access to the lumbar sympathetic nerve or chain. A short segment of the lumbar sympathetic nerve including the nerve cells is excised.
Patients are required to stay in the hospital for 48 to 72 hours for adequate pain relief. Regular pain killers are required following discharge
The results following lumbar sympathectomy are outstanding, achieving the objective of dry feet in all cases. Rebound sweating, which can occur following ETS, does not occur after lumbar sympathectomy. Some patients report an ache in the thigh for the first six weeks.
